Adding static page to WordPress
November 18, 2007 by geekycoder
For Version 2.3x (old version)
To add a Internal Page
1) Login to WordPress, and navigator to the Pages tab. (Manage -> Pages)
2) Click on the <Create a new page> link. The following Write Page will appear.
|
3) As you can see, the editor is similar as that for Post, and whatever you can do to a Post, you can do to a page !
The difference is there are some controls which allow you rearrange the page among the settings.
4) For a start, all you need is just add the Page Title and its Page Contents and save it.
Note that setting the Page Parent, means that Page will appear under its Parent, and not as tab. In the widget, it will display as indented to signify a child page.
|
5) Once added, return to Pages screen to see the list of Pages added.
You can edit and delete it just like a Post entry.
|
The newly created page will appear as a tab in WordPress, and on the sidebar as Page widget. The Page widget must be enabled before it is shown on the SidePanel (Default is off). So from now, on you can just click on the tab or the link in the widget to access the internal page. What’s a convenience !
To show the Page widget, go to <Presentation -> Widgets> tab. And then drag the Pages widget from the <Available Widget> panels to SideBar panel. Remember to save the changes.
|
To add a External Page
1) To add a external Page, go to <BlogRoll -> Mangage Blogroll> tab
2) Click on <Add links> link to add new Link. The Add Link screen will appear.
Note that this screen also allow to edit and delete link entry.
|
3) For a start, add a name, address link and description. Another important option is the Target which allow you to open it in the a new Window instead of same window as blog site. Select the _blank option in Target to open it in new Window.
If for some reason, you need to disable it, just set its visibility option.
Assign it to default Category. All the category name can be changed.
4) When done, click the Add Link button. Return back to BlogRoll list to check if new link is added. If you need to change the Category name, just go to Category tab to change it.
|
The BlogRoll will show the newly add link in the sideBar panel. Make sure that the BlogRoll widget is enabled to show it. |
To enable the BlogRoll widget, Go to the Widget Screen, and drag the <Links> widget from the <Available Widgets> panel and then save the changes. |

Love wp- also found a way to make a main page sticky with a plugin, love wp, can do so much with it.

agienthea,
Wordpress has been upgraded and the appearance is changed. The post has now been updated for WordPress 2.5x.
Good article and a very big help. Appreciate the time and effort made of going into detail.
The articles and photos assisted me in my switching to word press for everything I need in a web page. I am writing articles on how to use WP to make money.

,
How we add spesific page (whit ID), as example we want add about me/author page to sidebar without using widget.
i have try to find it but, nothing happen 😦
Thanks,
I really enjoy n helped by your blog
Cheers
When You say specific page without using widget , do you mean that it does not appear as tab but in sidebar ?
If so, I suggest creating a blog post and then link it in BlogRoll. Creating a page means it need to have a parent page else it will appear as tab, and there seen no way to hide a page from appearing in tab.

Thanks that was a lovely post!
However, when I am making a subpage, it is showing in the side menu but on the header(top menu) the subpage doesnt show when there is a mouse over on the parent page.(I hope I had been able to explain correctly). How can I make the sub page show under the main page in the menu on header on the mouse over(as in all websites). Kindly send the notification/reply to my email id.
Thanks in advance!

good job geekycoder!
this post solve my problem.
You seem quite proficient in these matters:
I have run into a little issue: I have a self hosted WordPress blog and i have divided my content into 14 categories… Only 1 of Which: “Blog” i want to show up on the home page. I want all other thirteen categories to be directly linked to specific static pages relevant to the category theme that it refers to.
Do i need to create 14 different blogs?
Or does WordPress have a function that would permit me to tell it:
Post Category X to this page
Post category Y to this page
Post Category Z to this page
and so on…
I would greatly appreciate suggestions if you have any.
thanks
well done. the question is very common. a good answer is not.
Speak to you soon.

“Another major difference is that External Page always appearS** in the same Window (Tab change) whereas External Page can appear in same Window or a New Window.”
This doesn’t make any sense. Which is which? Is it the External or the Internal that always appears in the same window?
Thx for highlightling the error.

It should be

Fascinating, helpful article. I’d be interested in two things:
1) Creating a static homepage (like a traditional website) with the blog on a different page;
2) Having a different theme for each page.
At the moment I’m having huge difficulties selecting more than one themes. I’m currently using wordpress.com
I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks …
Wow thats awesome contents with nice explanation specially related to Difference between Page and Post and Tips for Editing and Adding the Pages.
thanks for the brilliant knowledge.
may god bless u 🙂
Cool post, I was wondering whether or not we should leave our static page as the “home” page of our blog (obviously we use wordpress), and with this post, kind of made me realize the benefit of using a page as a home.
Thanks,

Hey there! Thanks for this site and for offering so many tips.
Just one question: Do the search engines regard a POST (with a permalink structure setup so that posts look like http://www.domain.com/post_name.html) as a static html page?
When I add a post with my permalinks setup like this, it appears to me (looking at the URL) that it is a unique page within the site, but does Google see it the same way?
I ask because I want to properly optimize my site and I know that each PAGE should be otpimized around only one main keyword. I’m just not sure if creating posts optimized around on main keyword would be indexed by the search engines the same as if I had created a new page all together, or if I should create new PAGES rather than posts…
Thanks so much in advance!
