For those enthusiastic to develop cool RIA application using the recent release of JavaFX Preview SDK will feel hamper by difficultly of locating information using the HTML documentation that comes with it. The documentation can be hard to browse and use in Web Browser especially for a developer who want to use JavaFX efficiently and effectively. The lack of search function will also make using and learning JavaFX API a time-consuming experience. Although developer can still use the Internet search engine to search for API but this is often slow and requires Internet connection.

If you looking for a much better way of using the documentation, there is a solution for you. What’s better way to store those documentation than in CHM help format. CHM (Microsoft Compiled HTML Help) file is that can be viewed easily from those running Windows 98, XP onwards. It allows user to select from a tree of topics and to perform search and print function. In addition, CHM been a self-contained file can easily be distributed.I have compiled the documentation into CHM format so why not download it and start to learn JavaFX more effectively.
Feel free to distribute this file
Although CHM is developed by Microsoft, there are CHM viewers available for other platforms
- For Linux, visit CHM viewers for Linux
- For MacOSX, visit CHM viewer apps – Fast offline manual access, Chmox – a Mac OS X CHM viewer
Note that I yet to try the CHM file on those platforms.
To find out how the CHM look like, read on…
Do whatever you can do in a web browser, only better and more convenient using CHM Help

Power search function make searching for API a breeze

Happy development with JavaFX !

- Fix ‘image not showing’ problem in javafx.scene.geometry.
5 Aug 2008 – Build 100
Note that many have reported problems with opening the CHM file. Since then the latest build add the build number on the titlebar so that users can identify the build. In addition, those untitled topic during search no longer appears (since html files are been added with title tag). Do not link to the download file because the download file will now have different name with build number eg javafxdocbuild100.doc as some users may have problem getting the file having the same file name and size due to browser cache. Instead link to the post.
Build Number added and Search no longer return untitled (at least not so much)

downloaded and renamed, all the links are broken. How to fix it or could you put the chm in a zip?
Having same issues mike mentioned.
Mike & Auguste and others wo have problem opening the file ,
My apology. I have re-uploaded the file that is generated with a help of a distant friend who own a program WinChm. The new resultant chm file has been tested to work with Windows XP and Vista.
I’m not sure whether it works with Chm viewer from MacOSX and Linux though.
Please download the file again. Do let me know if the problem persists.
thank…
CHM files are always welcome but no document is visible in this one. All I can see is the TOC and nearly all the search results have “untitled” title. This needs a lot more testing before being published.
Geekcoder,
Tried again, still all the links are still broken. Don’t know what’s wrong or how to fix it.
Mike, James,
may I know what version of windows are been used in your case ?
Mike, James,
is the titlebar of the CHM shows the text WinCHM Prov3.6 ? If not, that is probably not the latest or that the browser may have return a cache version of the old chm.
Does anyone else has similar problems ?
The CHM seems to work for some but not for others.
For those who have trouble opening the chm file
These might help to as it is a known problem

After some struggle, I found what’s wrong: right click the file, properites, click unblock.
It works! Thanks for putting this together.
Mike,
glad it works for you finally.
Thanks a lot for your work!
Maybe you can add a note right beside the download link that explains how to unblock the file, because many users will run into the problem and they might not read the comments?
Thomas Weitzel,
sure, no problem.
Can Mike explain what is meant by right click the file, properties, click unblock ? In what versions of Windows ?
Can’t locate the unblock option as I am using Vista.
How are you generating the help files? Are you using the HTML or going directly from the XML source? If you have a way of producing these from an XML transform I can show you a better way of doing the generation. Please email me at joshua.marinacci@sun.com.
Thanks,
Josh
Hi Josh,
the help file is generated using a program call WinChm. It is using HTML file and by following link and directory structure, it automatically generates the Tree topics.
That is interesting about using XML to generate documentation, will be interested to hear about it.
Hi,
I put up your CHM at Hiveminds and gave you credit for the build. the files are behind a login but anyone desiring to download from Hiveminds will also find many other CHM files of interest. The file is alos stored in its original CHM format. Good job!
Josh Marinacci, you can use Doxygen to build a CHM from XML as long as you have the help.exe compiler on your machine.
Sweet, reregistering the hhctrl.ocx worked wonders for me, all pages now visible.
Thanks a lot for this chm!
All sugar and honey
i m finding this file as a .docs i m using windows vista and it is not working
