This method is somewhat over-complicated. I strongly suggest user uses the more intuitive Flickr’s Set function as elaborate in Vodpoding Flickr SlideShow Widget into WordPress.com – Part 2: Using Set function.
I pretty sure this error message
What happen is that even though one can embed Flickr widget into WordPress.com following the method highlighted in Layman’s Guide To Embedding Flickr SlideShow into WordPress.com using Vodpod, the success is short-lived as the error will surface after a day.
What exactly happen ?
If one use embed code in Flickr Widget in other sites, the widget will work flawlessly. However, if one use it by vodpod-ing it in WordPress.com, it is highly unlikely that it will not work at all. Based on personal observation, it turns out that Flickr widget in WordPress.com insist on performing search (regardless), and only those pictures that have the “search” term in its label and description will be displayed. As to what the “search” term used, only Flickr knows (I suspect that URL query string is used as search term, hence guarantee a invalid search). Hence if no picture is found, the error will be returned.
The good news is there is a viable solution that as far has worked perfectly. The bad news is that it required certain deliberate effort by users. Basically the trick is to place a unique “keyword” into the description or label of the picture that is going to be displayed in the widget. Flickr will then search for that keyword and display those pictures into the widget.
Some might discover other ways of making it work (eg creating a SET). So here’s my way:
The following highlight the major steps
- Add Keyword
Upload the pictures, and add the “keyword” into the label and description of the picture that is going to display in widget.
Add the keyword into the filename of the picture before uploading as Flickr does not have a convenient way to batch rename file.
Note that the keyword must be one word (no space) and very unique that others are unlikely to “carelessly” use it.
if a picture is label “Beautiful USA flower”,
add the keyword “GeekyCoder987”
so that the label or description becomes
“GeekyCoder987 – Beautiful USA flower”.
Note that you can just keyword to either label or description, not necessarily both.
It is important that your keyword is truly unique otherwise any picture from flickr that has the keyword will be included.
Take note too after editing the label and description, it may not be immediately reflected in search. There is a lag which may take few minutes before the updated information is available for search. This anomaly may easily be mistaken it as a “search bug”.
- List Search Item
Append your keyword into the following Search_URL
where keyword is one word used to identify the picture, and then invoke that URL in your browser. Any picture satisfying that keyword will be shown.
taking the preceding example, the Search_URL will be http://www.flickr.com/search/show/?q=GeekyCoder987
As you have noticed the difference between displaying the result in widget and in HTML is just the addition of “/Show” word.
Use to show full screen Flash Slideshow widget for Vodpod capture. http://www.flickr.com/search/show/?q=keyword
Useful for testing result in HTML as showing in widget takes longer time.
It is important to use the Search_URL and not the one displayed in Flickr Search page, otherwise the widget error will be displayed.
- Once the pictures show up in the widget, just capture it as usual using Vodpod. You can use easily obtain the shortcode/embedCode as shown in Vodpod no longer require posting to site to obtain the Embed Code (Shown below)
So after successfully embed the widget into your blog, the widget will display and one has to click on play to start slideshow.Vodpod videos no longer available.
As stated, there are some caveats in vodpoding Flickr widget. Do take note that
- The keyword is used to identify the pictures for widget. It is easy to jettison if other users deliberately (or inadvertently) use similar keyword for their pictures’’ label and description.
- the picture may display randomly.
- The change to the label and description of pictures take some time before promulgate for searching.
Hope that you find the aforementioned method useful !
Aside from the 1gb storage limitation, I highly recommend using Google SlideShow widget (check out https://geekycoder.wordpress.com/2008/02/22/comiqs-testing123/) as it simply works without fuss. Sweetening the (free) deal is the seamless integration of
